The Pell Grant: Requirements and Application Process
The Pell Grant is federal financial aid designed for low-income students seeking to finance their university education. Because it's a grant and not a loan, it does not have to be repaid, which makes it a very valuable resource.
What is the Pell Grant?
It's a federal grant for undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. It's meant to cover higher-education costs such as tuition, books, and related expenses.
Main requirements
- Demonstrate financial need based on the FAFSA.
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible permanent resident.
- Be enrolled in an eligible undergraduate program.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
Application process
- Complete the FAFSA: it's the form that determines your eligibility for federal aid.
- Review your SAR report: you'll see a summary of your information and your need index.
- Receive the aid offer: your university will tell you the grant amount.
- Renew each year: you must submit the FAFSA again every academic year.
Applying for the Pell Grant should be every student's first step: it's money you don't pay back and can significantly reduce your need for loans.
